Acquiring Luxembourgish nationality by option
Applying for Luxembourg nationality after having legally resided in Luxembourg for at least 20 years does not require the applicant to pass a nationality test. However, applicants must attend an approved language course that is designed to introduce them to the Luxembourgish language. The course consists of 24 hours of instruction and focuses on speaking and listening skills. Upon successful completion of the course, applicants can then proceed to submit their nationality application.
It is important to note that the final year of residence prior to submitting an option declaration for nationality must not have been interrupted in order for the nationality application to be successful. Therefore, applicants are advised to check that they meet this criteria before progressing with their nationality application.
By taking the Luxembourgish language course and submitting a nationality application, adults who have legally resided in Luxembourg for at least 20 years can apply to become Luxembourgish citizens and enjoy all the rights and benefits that come with it. The language course is a 24-hour programme focusing on speaking and listening skills, giving applicants the necessary knowledge to communicate in Luxembourgish.
Applicants who successfully complete this process will be granted nationality with full civil rights.
